A benefit run for the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research of Canada is scheduled this Sunday, august 15th,
from 9:00 Am to 12:30PM at Centennial Park , Etibicoke , Ontario.
The Foundation for Prader-Willi Research Canada was established in 2006 by parents of children with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS). Today, FPWR Canada is composed of parents, family members, researchers, and others from BC, Alberta, Ontario, PEI and across Canada, who are interested in addressing the many issues related to Prader Willi Syndrome, including childhood obesity and autism spectrum disorders.
The mission of FPWR Canada is to eliminate the challenges of Prader-Willi Syndrome through the advancement of research.
rader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder that occurs in approximately one out of every 15,000 births. PWS affects males and females with equal frequency and affects all races and ethnicities. PWS is recognized as a common genetic cause of childhood obesity.

Prader Willi Syndrome was first described by Swiss doctors Andrea Prader, Alexis Labhart and Heinrich Willi in 1956 based on the clinical characteristics of nine children they had examined. The common characteristics defined in the initial report included small hands and feet, abnormal growth and body composition (small stature, very low lean body mass and early onset childhood obesity), hypotonia at birth, insatiable hunger, extreme obesity and intellectual disability.

In recent years, the syndrome has been genetically characterized as an abnormality of chromosome 15, and definitive diagnosis is now based on genetic testing.

In honor of the Festival of laughs , the popular travel guide called Montreal one of the 10 happiest places.

The popular Lonely Planet travel guide picked Montreal for its list of cheerful locales, noting that Canada’s second-largest city hosts one of the world’s biggest comedy events every July.

“Clean, welcoming and refreshingly multicultural, Montréal is happy enough year-round. Come July, though, it’s downright hilarious. Just For Laughs takes over the city in summer, packing venues with the best in both Anglo- and Francophone comedy. It’s one of the biggest comedy gatherings in the world, hosting many a top-drawer wisecracker. Shows sell out fast, as even the less known acts are virtually guaranteed to be a riot. But even if you can’t get a ticket you can giggle along – every night the city’s Latin Quarter is abuzz with street performers, parading puppets and a fantasia of fireworks.
First mention on the list went to the South Pacific island paradise of Vanuatu — which has the advantage of being considerably warmer than the next city listed, Montreal.

Lonely Planet’s list highlighted some lesser-known spots. Montreal is the only Canadian location selected, along with places in China, Japan, Colombia and Africa.

The selection was made in May but when it was picked up by the Huffington Post it caused a stir.

MONTREAL BAROQUE is an initiative of Susie Napper, Montreal cellist and gambist who was nominated “Personality of the Year 2002” by the Conseil Québecoise de la Musique.
Old Montreal’s Early Music Festival, MONTREAL BAROQUE offers a unique opportunity to hear music of the 17th and 18th centuries, performed by Canadian and international celebrities, in appropriate and unusual settings. Snaking through the narrow streets of the Old City to the sound of a hundred flutes at the festival’s Grand Parade, relaxing at a garden concert, catching a choral concert in a chapel or simply enjoying a street performance, this festival gives a new cultural identity to Old Montreal, attracting international tourists and local music lovers as well as novices to Early Music.

OLD MONTREAL
MONTREAL BAROQUE presents concerts in innovative settings with the help and encouragement of existing cultural institutions in the Old City. Museums such as the Musée de la Pointe-à-Callière and the Château Ramezay as well as the Musée Stuart, the Chapelle and Marché Bonsecours have all become partners to help promote the Old City on a cultural level. They have offered unique venues to the Festival for concert performances that have been attracting capacity audiences. During the Festival in June 2003, the first concerts were heard in the crypt of the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de Bonsecours, the Station de Pompage de la Pointe-à-Callière, (both concerts had to be repeated several times to accommodate the demand), and the newly renovated gardens of the Chateau Ramezay.

EARLY MUSIC: MONTREAL
Montreal, a city effervescent with cultural activities of all kinds, is ready to become a major player in the world of Early Music. Over the past 30 years, with support from all levels of government, the radio and Montreal’s thriving record companies, groups such as the Studio de Musique Ancienne de Montréal, Ensemble Arion, Les Boréades, etc., have flourished in the city, developing an array of unique styles and featuring the rich bank of talented Montreal musicians. Yet the city remains relatively unknown on the international scene. A festival is the perfect stage from which to launch Montreal’s musicians, and initiate cooperative projects with musicians from abroad.

Joy turned to a little hell as looters turned to vandalism following the Montreal Canadiens’ Game 7 victory in Pittsburgh.
An eardrum-rattling eruption of joy following the Montreal Canadiens’ Game 7 victory in Pittsburgh turned ugly late Wednesday night when police clashed with dozens of object-tossing youths and fired tear gas.

The trouble erupted downtown a few hours after the Canadiens’ 5-2 victory and after many of the jersey-wearing hockey fans had gone home. Police reported 10 arrests shortly after midnight, although damage to stores was limited.

Shortly after the beloved Canadiens’ 5-2 victory over the Penguins, fireworks erupted over Ste-Catherine Street as people crowd-surfed and held aloft trinkets including Stanley Cups replicas and a stuffed penguin.

The flag-waving crowd was as euphoric as the 21,000 fans who crammed into the Bell Centre to watch the game on giant screens. After the game, they spilled out into the streets chanting, “We want the Cup! We want the Cup!

It’s really a shame because Montreal has a history of hockey related violence.

Cars were burned and downtown stores were trashed and looted after the Canadiens beat Boston in the 2008 playoffs, and there also were riots after Montreal’s Stanley Cup victories in 1986 and 1993. The most famous riot was in 1955 when Habs great Maurice Richard was suspended and fans took to the street to cause such havoc that Richard had to make a public appeal for calm.

28th edition: March 18 to 28, 2010 PROGRAM

FILMS IN COMPETITION
43 films from 14 countries
9 Canadian productions, including 8 from Quebec

Highlights

The International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA) is unique in North America and the largest of its kind in the world. In 2000, it was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix by the Montreal Arts Council.

Films on art allow viewers a special contact with artists that no other mode of expression can provide. They employ a variety of approaches, including analysis of the works, recreation of artistic currents and eras and artist biographies.

FIFA’s mission is to increase public awareness and appreciation of art. It thus promotes artists and professionals working in the fields of cinema, television and video, as well as the world’s finest productions of media art and films on art.

The importance and popularity of documentary films worldwide has increased dramatically. According to a study done in 2006, the audiovisual industry in Europe alone produced nearly 10,000 documentaries in 5 years.

FIFA receives close to 700 films annually. This year, 290 films from some 30 countries were selected, representing 27 disciplines: architecture, theatre, video art, dance, art history, painting, photography…

Films on art, which preserve artists and their works for posterity, are instrumental in safeguarding our cultural heritage and collective memory. The Festival has amassed over the years a treasure trove of films and videos, numbering close to 5,000 works, which includes both the selected films and those submitted during the preselection process. Added to this total is a large number of photographs, as well as a collection of posters. In addition, for each film submitted to the Festival, a file containing its relevant documents is preserved. The Festival has thus stockpiled 10,000 files over the years. Finally, the Festival has an ever-increasing collection of over 500 books and journals relating to films on art.

Every year, the prizewinning films of the latest edition of FIFA are presented on an international circuit that includes the Louvre in Paris, the Studio national des arts contemporains Le Fresnoy in Tourcoing, the AIA/Center for Architecture, the Mid-Manhattan Library and the Morgan Library in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Musée national des beaux-arts in Quebec City, the National Gallery of Canada and the Tate Modern in London
